Not Just a “Phase” – UROP Designs Better Way to Visualise Chemical Space

We recently checked in at the CSIRO Parkville Science Club to hear what UROP scholar Luke Thorburn has been up to. Turns out, he’s been busy!

Luke has just finished a Bachelor of Science at Melbourne Uni, majoring in Statistics & Stochastic Processes. As a UROP scholar at CSIRO, he has developed a new visualisation platform for chemical space that will help crystallographers design optimisation screens for protein crystallisation. Celia Vandestadt loves zebrafish. Really loves zebrafish.

The animals are what Celia calls “king regenerators” – they have the capacity to regenerate any nerve that is injured and, being see-through, scientists can literally watch the regeneration within the living fish. Add to that the fact that they share 85% genetic similarity to humans when it comes to diseases they share, and it’s clear why zebra fish are one of the world’s great ways to study how the nervous system works.

In 2013 Celia won a UROP placement at ARMI and in 2016 she went on to be one of 17 people in all disciplines nationally to be awarded a Westpac Future Leaders Scholarship. Crediting her UROP placement as having kick-starting her research career, Celia said “These days you need to have an honours degree to even be a research assistant. To do a PhD you have to get a first class honours. The competition is intense.” Continue reading

Gender Equity in Scientific Research

The Bio21 Cluster is pleased to be a partner in the ARC Linkage Grant “Women in the Scientific Research Workforce: Identifying and Sustaining the Diversity Advantage”, led by Professors Sharon Bell and Lyn Yates.

The goal of the study is to provide greater understanding of the careers of women and men in the scientific research workforce and to inform workforce planning and policy making in the science and innovation sector.  While previous investigations have focussed principally on universities, this study also involves researchers from research institutes, CSIRO and industry.
