Dr Gerald Chan, CEO of diversified investment group Morningside Ventures, presented “The Role of Universities in the Innovation Ecosystem”. He drew on his esteemed global experience as an investor, board director, scientist and philanthropist in an exploration of the role of universities in the innovation landscape.

Dr Chan spoke about the importance of strong leadership in driving research quality, as well as the importance of fostering students and institutions that take scientific risk. He also emphasised that governments should view science not as an expense, but as an investment.
Dr Chan has ample experience to draw from. As co-founder of Morningside, he engages in private equity and venture capital investments in North America, Asia and Europe. He is director of Hong Kong-based property holding company Hang Lung Group Limited and serves on the boards of biotechnology companies across North America and Europe.
The presentation was followed by a Q&A and a networking session, which allowed attendees to mingle over refreshments.
